Catching something

I've got a bug to get back to regular training, not just running when I can or feel like it, because that's almost never. It's never too early to plan for next year, right? I'm going to knock Oregon and Tennessee out of the 50 state list as the only athletic plans out there. I'm already registered for the Boring Marathon in Boring, Oregon outside of Portland. I'm also looking at either the Dirt Circuit (probably), a 12 hour race near Knoxville, or the Trash Panda Marathon (raccoons) in Chattanooga. I like the 12 hour because I can rest in between laps, it's a 3 mile loop so I can do 9 loops and call it a day if I want to.

Those are both in September of 2019. Plenty of time to train after I finish up some of these projects, and I'm planning on taking that (Fall 1) as my break from grad school anyway. I can only take 5 out of 6 possible class times next year, so that's going to be the skip. Really I'm ready to be done with grad school already. It's take a LOT of time and I kind of hate it. Head down, muddle through, take it one class at a time. I finished the first class already with an 89.75, a quarter point away from an A.

How I really feel about grad school
Again, I'm so glad the election is over. The blue wave is really nice and seems reasonable, but I really wish Beto had won and Florida didn't fuck up everything again. Mostly just because I despise Ted Cruz and Rick Scott as people as well as for their political propaganda.

I hate Florida
Final note: it's been so long since I've posted anything here I totally missed the Thanksgiving gratefulness post and the 10 year blog anniversary post. I ate so much over Thanksgiving that I'm not sure I will ever actually be hungry again. Well, at least not until I actually start running.

Gravity Catches

The quote is "Old age and gravity eventually catch up to us all" is totally ringing true these days. So far 2017 is going great, really. I'm moving into a managerial role at work, the kids are doing great at school, and we had some good snow days last week. I'm settling into a really good pattern of workouts that are a lot of fun, even if they aren't getting me really prepared for my March marathons. This is not a downer post.

But I do miss running! I've been getting out there about once a week since 11/6. Actually I took the first 3 weeks off completely after the City of Oaks marathon. This tendonitis in my right foot hasn't gone away yet. I thought that by January I could get back up to 30-50 mile weeks so my patience is wearing a bit thin here. I'm taking the zen practice of acceptance approach to the whole thing. Fixing it now will be easier than fixing it later. Take each day as it comes. I've got 5 marathons coming up, it's better to rest now and miss the first few than to push it now and miss them all.

Last night Evil Genius fell asleep in the wrong place. That meant Daddy had to correct the situation. That meant Daddy threw out his lower back trying to pick up a little girl. And that meant Daddy was laughing aaaaaalllllll day about how much pain he was in.

I really did think it was funny. I mean, you have to be able to laugh at yourself. So today I went to the chiropractor and got a fantastic adjustment. My regular tuesday has been some yoga before work, then hitting the weights and the stationary bike at the gym at night. I decided not to workout at all today to let the back recoup. It feels great now.

Also today I made an appointment for the dentist to makeup for one that got cancelled during snowpocalypse. I also called to setup a new patient appointment for a family physician. The last time I got a cold of some kind I wanted antibiotics but didn't have a regular doc to take care of that. So I'm going in for a physical so that situation won't come up again. Also I made an appointment to get some acupuncture, hopefully that will FINALLY help this foot tendonitis heal up!

But as a health nut, going to the chiropractor on the same day that I line up visits for acupuncture, a filling, and a physical just seems excessive. I shouldn't need to talk to four doctors offices in one day. But I guess old age and gravity really do catch up to us all.

Disney - A Dissenting Opinion

Orlando is a scrotum. Seriously, it's a hot, sticky, disgustingly wrinkled place and nobody's ever really comfortable when you're down there. The only reason Disney put the resort in Orlando is because the land was so cheap. It gets all of the heat and humidity of central Florida without any of the wind benefit that make the coastal regions more pleasant. I have no idea why people choose to live there, it is truly an awful place.

As you might have already guessed, I'm not a huge fan of going to Disney World. I'm glad the wife and kids have fun there, they can have it. I went once as a small child, then again twice in high school with various choirs and after that I had no desire to return but still had fond memories of the place. As a responsible parent, I know taking the kids to Disney is one of those things that you just have to do once when they are an appropriate age. I did it, check that off of the responsible parent list, and I won't go back until we're taking the grandkids. And as much as I don't like writing negative posts, I bet I'm not the only one who thinks the magic kingdom is a gateway to Hell.

When we were in Orlando last week the parks were in full scrotal conditions. It was the kind of dead of summer heat that makes my Seasonal Affective Disorder kick in. I get upset just walking from my air conditioned house to my air conditioned car in those conditions, and I'm supposed to enjoy spending all day outside in that? no. All the no's.

I hate large crowds of people. As an empath apparently this is typical behavior. I'm certainly not a germaphobe, in fact I'm more in the "purell gives you cancer" crowd, but large crowds of people, especially with a high concentration of non-americans can bring a very high probability of new bug exposure. Anyone remember SARS? I saw an older asian woman cough violently near me while holding a t-shirt, then put the t-shirt back on the rack in front of me. That's when I was ready to leave that store. And of course the kids had to touch everything they could possibly come in contact with. The voice in my head screamed "don't touch that" every 10 seconds. Call it a diverse bacterial pool.

The long lines don't really bother me. They did when I was younger, but now as an old guy I have patience, and they usually make you stand in line in the shade so it's actually more comfortable than standing around in the rest of the park. And you get 3 fastpasses a day now, which is a thing of beauty. With a fastpass, you arrive at a ride at a specific time and you go to the head of the line so there's no waiting. The downside to this is that anyone without a fastpass on that ride now has to wait longer thanks to you. So the rides you don't have fastpasses for have a longer wait than they used to.

I don't understand the appeal to waiting in line to get a picture & signature with a princess. Some of those things had 90 minute wait times! It's just a college student in a costume. Why not put like 5 of them in every park so nobody has to wait?

The main reason I prefer snow to heat is that I am a fairly affectionate person. I like to hug people, and hold hands with the wife sometimes. But in sticky heat when I have to be covered in sunscreen I don't want anyone to be near me or come anywhere close to touching me. It's the main reason I don't really enjoy going to the beach in summertime. I feel miserable, disgusting, and don't want anyone else to be close enough to smell me. If I could design my own personal Hell it would be a hot sticky sweaty disgusting place filled with large crowds of people where you spend 80% of your time waiting on something.  Oh wait, that's Disney World.  Every day I woke up, took a shower before breakfast, then put on sunscreen. I felt clean for - at most - 15 minutes a day.

The meal plan sucked. I mean, it didn't totally suck, but man. I like to eat 3 meals a day of reasonable proportion and a few snacks with plenty of water. The "meal plan" is one snack, one counter meal, and one sit down meal for each night you're in the hotel. What that really meant is that I spent all day hungry until we got to sit down and eat until I hated myself, thanksgiving style. We had 4 nights in the hotel and 5 days in the park so we ran out of meal plan in the end (which is what you're supposed to do). What they called a counter meal was a normal portion regular meal. The sit down meals were typically in the $25 - $50 per person smorgasboards. And yes, I will totally admit that the $33 steak I had in the Beasts' castle is one of the better steaks I've ever eaten. So it's not all bad. But if you want to be all inclusive then be all inclusive. I should be able to eat 3 meals a day. Every meal comes with a drink and dessert, that really is bad form too. Alcohol is not included in the meal plan. If every meal comes with a drink and you sell Bud Light, you're not really being all inclusive. The basic premise of skip breakfast, eat a light lunch, and gorge yourself on dinner is why America has an obesity problem. The meal plan is only trying to spread that plan to the rest of the world.

I did actually gain 7 lbs the week I was in the park. Even with all of that walking.

Originally, I was actually excited to have my family in central Florida. I wanted to leave the parks around noon on Friday so we could go do this gator tour thing I did when I was in Cocoa Beach for a work thing last year. The kids would go nuts in the Ron Jon Surf Shop, and I found the best fish tacos at a restaurant in Cocoa Beach that Kelley would love. Then on Saturday the Mets were playing a spring training game in Port St Lucie about an hour south of Cocoa. we could drive to Tybee after the game. But I was so miserable the entire time in the park the mission on Friday became to get out of Florida as soon as possible. Halfway through Thursday I was totally done and ready to head back to NC. But, you know, it's a magical place.

My butthole is a magical place too, but you don't want to spend too much time there either.

At the end of the day, Disney is a for-profit, publicly traded, Giant Evil Corporation (GEC). And as much as they want to create magic. all they really care about in the end is sucking as much of your money away from you as possible, like any other GEC. They are really good at it. Just because they don't pay off politicians like Koch does, or buy legislation like Monsanto, they are just as evil. And just as hungry for those profits. There's 3 gift shops for every ride now, and every show ends with another gift shop. I didn't buy any souvenirs while I was there. Kelley and the kids went nuts. They charge an obscene amount to include staying at the resort hotel, going to the park, and eating on the meal plan. it's awful.

My favorite part of taking a trip like this is the spontaneity. I don't like to plan more than a hotel reservation, and even those can be optimistic. You go somewhere, explore, find a cool restaurant nearby, maybe discover that the town has an aquarium or museum. Time becomes fluid on vacation. Kelley has been planning this trip since October. We had to plan what parks we were going to be at on what days and what times we were going to ride the fast passes and where our dinner reservations were. We had to set alarms to wake up on time 4 of the 5 days. Disney starts out with Hell, then takes away all of the fun parts and you pay three times as much as a fun vacation.

So what went right?

These complaints are all in the environment that was created here and have no reflection on my lovely wife who planned the whole thing or my parents who paid for the entire trip. I just don't understand why people think that place is fun? Why would you go there without kids age 5-10? Why would you go back after you've been once and know how awful it is? it makes absolutely no sense to me. But surely the entire thing couldn't have been totally miserable for me?

I am very grateful for getting to spend that much time with my family and my parents. There was all of the normal conflict like when EG doesn't want to pose for a picture, but for the most part everyone got along really well. And it has been many years since I've been able to see my parents on a daily basis, much less spend the entire day with them!

It may be true that I only eat steak about once every 2 or 3 years, but as I mentioned before that was a fantastic steak. The other sit-down meals that we had were incredibly tasty, even if they were over-indulgent. The Gray Stuff dessert was actually delicious at Be Our Guest, I didn't have to ask the dishes. The buffet of appetizers in Norway was incredible, much better than the pork chop entree. So the ridiculously overpriced food is really tasty, even if the meal plan overall is very frustrating.

Beer. I didn't know they sold beer in Disney, and that was really a saving grace. Getting to knock back that many cold ones with my dad was really fun. And Germany in Epcot center has some really good beers.

Now I know, definitively, that Hell still contains plenty of girls with giant hooters. Somehow, that gives me comfort.

And finally, today, Mom mailed us printouts of her pictures and that included this one. Evil Genius is now the luckiest guy in Disney World.

And that is the best way to me to get off of my soap box and back into happy positive healthy-training-weight loss-swimming-running-Raleigh Rocks blogger mode!

Funny Friday Ramblings

Pretty much, since Rev3 Cedar Point, I've been all like

seriously. The motivation was kind of there. I was sort of one day looking forward to maybe getting in to a regular workout routine again one day. But it's also important to really enjoy the offseason. If you enjoy the offseason too much, it gets harder to get back to training weight or get an endurance base back.

In the meantime, regular strength training and yoga really help keep the stress level down. I've been running when I can but not focused on 50+ mile weeks anymore. Yoga is everywhere

At EG's fall outing in the middle of the woods. I am a tree among the trees
I even needed a little help getting my forehead to the floor
I swear that's actually a really difficult pose. It looks like my back is a bit too rounded though. Other Evil Genius involved activities included another tribe meeting at Moe's this time, where the kids learned how to roll burrito's!  The kids loved it, and some of them really kept their rolling nice and tight.  Great future for these kids in fast food, and all of the jokes that come with it.

Learning to Roll

love: she only put cheese on her burrito
The beard is back, and my hair is starting to grow out. Every year when this happens I'm amazed at how much gray I have, and how much more has come in since last year. The beard has a ton of gray in it this year too! That's quite a surprise.

I am starting to get back into the swing of things again though. Swimming especially is rocking right now. The city pool that's close to my house has been closed all summer for air conditioning repairs, and it opened back up again this week! woo hoo!! Next week our team is supposed to start offering noon practices as well, and that is going to be freaking amazing. If I can actually swim 5 days a week by going Monday Wednesday and Friday at noon, and Tuesday Thursday at night, that's going to seriously rock.  Of course the way this offseason has been going

This is more like a before and after to the team. Before the Ironman I felt like the guy on the left, now I look more like the guy on the right, all fat and hairy. At least I got to swim twice this week, and that's only the 3rd and 4th times since the Ironman on sept 7. I keep hitting the wall around 2000 yards, but at least last night I was able to complete the entire workout. And I know that swim endurance base is going to come back quickly, my form feels good and the speed is almost there.

The most important part is that I am truly happy in this moment. Kelley and the girls are all really happy, I'm starting to think about some goals for next year, and revisit the ones I set for this year to see what I have left. I love not knowing what's coming next, because I know it's going to be spectacular. Have a great weekend!

Hilly Turkey Trot

This past Saturday was the Apex Turkey Trot 5k, and our friend Gina asked me to run with their oldest daughter. Now really, would you trust a guy with that mustache with your daughter? No.

Ready to run!

Don't trust that guy

We all got matching t-shirts with numbers on the back, so I was Racer 1A and my kid was Racer 1B, that way people would know that we were running together and would hopefully stay out of our way. The shirts worked out great.  I got in a quick warmup, got a few strange stares, and the race was ready to start!  Of course, I had the new Garmin 310, but the battery was completely dead. So here I am supposed to be pacing somebody else and I'm running naked.  Running naked with children (there's one for google's search index).

While we were running, the kids were doing this:

It was pretty crowded at first, but by the first mile marker the crowds had thinned significantly.  My kid got a side stitch and fell back a bit, but I kept her in my sights the entire time. We started at a good pace, but it wasn't too fast. This course was harder than I expected. It was basically just a path around a lake so I wasn't expecting too many tough hills. This course really tested me in that second mile.

By the time the 2 mile marker hit I was feeling it. The last mile fed me a steady diet of hills and more hills.  Finally we came off of the path, up a giant hill, through a parking lot then up the last hill to the finish line.  The official results said I crossed after 22:15. I was really hoping for a sub-22, but as challenging as that course was I'll take 22:15. That's a great time for that course, and my fastest 5k of the year.

Everyone else did really good as well! The kids had a blast. The whole thing made Evil Genius want to run a race with me, but Bigun still isn't interested.  Here are the rest of the funny or otherwise interesting finish line shots.

This girl was being chased by the chicken back there. too funny!

My kid finished strong when she saw her brother coming up behind her!

Said brother finished just after 30 minutes like a big man! Beat his dad, and solid.

Here comes dad. Joe had a good time.

The youngest kid is totally photobombing this pic of the family and their sandwich-eating kid in the finishers chute. rude.

Thing 3 and Gina made it!

And a great time was had by all. Even those 2 kid models on the right.

500

When I started this little corner of the interwebs back in September 2008 I had no idea I would still be running triathlons for this long, much less still be blogging about it. This is the 500th time I have posted to the ol' Smoke Trainer, so I thought I'd bring out some of the highlights in case you haven't been reading for the last five years.

Welcome

The first post I wrote explained why I run and what the family history was like. It was funny and the first time I realized I might have a "writing style". It also exposed just how much I care about my health and why I need to stay healthy.

At that time I had done one sprint triathlon and that was it. I jumped straight into multisport, having not done a 5k  or swam a lap before that race. I bought my first bike just 2 weeks before the race. When I crossed that finish line I knew I had beaten my addiction and found a suitable replacement.
From the Greenville Sprint 2008

I swam without goggles, and needed a CamelBak to get through a 15 mile bike ride, refilling the bladder in TA before a 5k run.  It was a big deal. I only did one other race in 2008.

I also wrote this little gem in 2008, which was really a precursor to other funny stuff.  I mean, 6 miles was a long run? come on.

The Kids

I post a lot of pictures and stories about the kids, but this one has to be the most important. I have emailed this story to plenty of people and told it in person thousands of times. If you've never read it you really should. It's the story of how we got the kids, and it's actually a funny and cringe-worthy tale of infertility and healing.

In 2009 I did the most posts of any year, 142. I did my second triathlon, and finally started to make it less of a big deal to race. It became a habit, something that I could post about regularly and start to see some continual improvement on.  I ran my first marathon, first Olympic distance triathlon, and first half iron distance triathlon. It was a banner year all around

Funny

I've been reading some of those posts again, and I was pretty consistently funny back then. The first oly race report has been repeated called one of the funniest race reports ever. I think the funniest post happens to be meme for 10 things about me. I don't know where that humor came from, but man that one cracks me up.

Funny things just seem to happen to me, like getting passed by a guy who farted as soon as he passed me while running in a half ironman, or getting offered a hit from a joint 16 miles into my first marathon. Too funny. Now I get really excited when something funny happens to me.

2011 was the big year with Ironman Florida as the highlight. I still talk about that trip and race like it was yesterday. So much fun. I also set a TON of PR's in 2011, because I had the most room to grow. 12 races where I set PR's, and only 4 where I didn't. crazy. But every single one has a race report on here. I also did the "half marathon every month" challenge, which was a lot of fun. Sometimes they were just 13.1 mile runs and sometimes races, but the times ranged from 1:39 to 2:13. crazy times.

After IMFL I got really depressed with no big goal like that to look forward to again. That meant in 2012 I just threw together anything I could think of. 300 days of yoga?  Sure, sounds like fun. 27 races? yes please. I'd race anything since it was an off-ironman year and I had no real target. 4 marathons, both the spring and fall Grand Prix series, open water swims. I'd race anything I could get into. It ended up being a really fun year.

This year I needed to focus on multisport and dedicated training for my second ironman. Beach 2 Battleship is only a few weeks away now, and the training is going smooth.  PR's are pretty hard to come by these days, but I certainly feel stronger now.

Next year is going to be a blast too! Kelley and I are going to try the 3-star marathon maniac thing, doing full marathons on 4 consecutive weekends if we can get into them all.  Challenge USA is talking about putting on an iron distance race in the 3rd weekend of June next year, so I might try and get into that. Ironman Chattanooga sold out too quickly, and I didn't have the cash to get in anyway. But we are planning on going to spectate my friends, volunteer for  something, and the plan is to register for 2015. And since I'll be 40 then, it could mean that I'll be making a run for a kona spot or it could end up being my last ironman. Who knows.  So that's what you have to look forward to for the next 500 posts here.

Speaking of old stuff....

20 years difference of me. The weight loss is a typical thing that I talk about, but it's harder for me to describe how thin I was when I was younger. That first pic is Christmas of my senior year of high school. Yes, that also means that my 20th high school reunion is coming up next month, and I will not be attending. For girls it's ok to be that skinny, but for guys it left me weak and unstable. I tried everything to gain weight. No matter how hard I lifted weights or what I ate I could not gain a pound. Of course I didn't know anything about healthy eating or gainer's nutrition then either, but being that thin was really tough.

Fast forward 10 years and after Kelley and I got married my metabolism started to catch up. Around age 23 or 25 the weight really started to come on, and I started being able to lift heavier weights too. I embraced it, then let it take over and I ballooned up 100 lbs heavier than I was out of high school. For my height (6'1") that was considered overweight but not obese. And the weight loss story is well documented on here.  Kelley did the weight watchers thing, I lost some. I went vegetarian with calorie restrictions and lost the rest. Now I'm sitting around 180 lbs, and it is a happy medium. I can have muscle definition and a neck.

This week I got some pictures of me that my grandmother had kept, plus plenty of others like my dad's high school pictures and lots of shots of his dad. Really cool stuff in there, but here's a few more that you might get a kick out of.

Me with a beard when Evil Genius was a wee tot

Bigun and I working the garden when we lived in SC

Kelley and EG in really big hats

me with my brothers Morgan and Michael. I had long hair in college, it's pulled back there.

Pictures from the Parties

First, we had a combined birthday party for the kids this year, and it was a few weeks ago.  Yea, I know I've been slacking on the cute kid pictures on here lately.  We did a joint party for both kids because we splurged getting a GIANT bouncy castle rented for the entire day!  It started early in the morning with our kids and the neighbors bouncing around, and by the end of the day....

Kelley's dad was doing face painting

The artist at work

Evil Genius with her main squeeze

We had 2 cakes and lots of ice cream

Mickey with our niece Kaileigh

EG with the secondary squeeze - both boyfriends at the same party?

Bigun opening presents

We had games all over the yard

seriously - Giant bouncy house

Marcus and I ended up drunk and in the bouncy house after the kids left

jumping around is a helluva workout!
We had the cornhole boards out, and other games.  Plus we had a tin tub out with waters and juice boxes for the kids.  But since it is summertime in the south, we ended up with lots of cold beer in there.  That's when I had to tell the other dads "Well Ferb, I know what we're going to do today".  And then by 5 pm after the kids had all gone home, my brother in law and I ended up cutting flips in the bouncy castle.  We talked a few of the other grownups into it too, but they didn't have the mustard to cut flips.

On the more low-key note, my birthday was this past sunday and I turned 38.  Nothing happens when you turn 38, so the whole day was pretty boring.  I don't make a big deal about my birthday, so we certainly downplayed it.
boring old man

Evil Genius got me some underwear.  She wanted to get me a bra for some reason.

Bigun went with a fluorescent running shirt.  These kids know me well.

Kelley ordered me a new Garmin 310xt, but it didn't get here yet so she wrapped up our old garmin instead.
It was a good birthday, I certainly felt loved by my family and friends.  Thanks for all the well wishes!
