Meetups

Since moving to Raleigh I have found a greater involvement in www.meetup.com, and I was wondering if you guys have had any luck with it. I found some really cool groups, some with special interest basis like rock climbing and triathlon. But some are more generic like the "I've always wanted to try that" group. These guys will pitch an idea that they've always wanted to do, like serve food at a local homeless shelter - or skydiving - anything goes with these folks. And other people in the group would like to do the same thing. So some things (like watch a hockey game from a skybox) can be done at a reduced group rate. I found a few things on meetup in Greenville, but here in Raleigh there seems to be more (and more involved) groups. Have I mentioned lately how much nicer the people are here? So have you ever made new friends through meetup?

I think I have found my regular training schedule while I'm here, and I'm glad to have some consistency in place. It looks like this:

Day, Before work, Lunch, After work
Monday, Tri Power, Swim, Long Bike
Tuesday, Yoga, Mountain Bike, Tempo Run
Wednesday, Tri Power, Run speedwork, Long Swim
Thursday, Yoga, Mountain Bike, Long Run
Friday, Tri Power, Swim

So I'm getting 3 swims, 3 bikes, and 3 runs in each week, plus the morning yoga or strength training. Because I'm lazy in the mornings. Mountain biking is done with a group from the office that has always gone mtb'ing over lunch every tuesday and thursday. The group includes some senior managers and vp's, so I get to let them feel faster than me and get some ass-kiss points.

Good thing the B2B is in 11 days! I'll get to follow my new groovy workout plan for this whole week before I really taper down next week. oh boy. But at least I'll be ready for the next big race. It still makes me feel more organized and settled in here in Raleigh.

I had an awesome weekend in Greenville. It was so good to see the girls again, I really missed them being away for a whole week. We just played and had fun all weekend long. It was too short. One more weekend in Greenville, then they are coming up here for the half ironman.

It must suck being away from the family.

Hang in there.

And good luck with the training.

I have looked at that Meetup site and it doesn't really applicable here... bummer.

I had never heard about meetup.com. Checked it out in my area for kicks and found "Albuquerque Coral Growers" on the first page. Really?!?? In the desert?!?!

I was lucky enough to hook up with a small group that were all using the 2009 Eagleman as our first 70.3. While it is rare that all of us can train together, it is great that there always seems to be one or two to help push with training even though we are all on different training plans. We are continuing the group (one of us is hitting IMLP in 2010 and the rest are looking to go long in 2011). We met via TNT and one of the local tri teams.

It might make sense to check out the "locals" to see if this type of option exists with the new "neighbors".

glad you had an awesome weekend! Never heard of that website, but i've made running/tri friends from joining a local running store's clinics! Neat idea though!

Solid solid workout schedule! And it's great you can get some riding in with the coworkers! That sounds like fun!

That's awesome that people in your office bike over lunch. Very cool & nice that it's part of the culture there. I've met a few people who run over lunch, but i just don't know how I'd have time to run& then get ready all over again. I feel like i'd be taking 2.5 hour lunches. Ha. Probably not cool.

But, there is a running club at Target, which I think is pretty cool. So I am going to start going to some of the seminars & maybe find a running buddy for weekend runs. We'll see.

OH, and I have done a running club meet-up. But only once. Why? Because one of the guys showed up in a KILT. WTF. He did not appear to be Irish and it looked like a Kilt that American Eagle would sell (if they sold such a thing) - in other words, it didn't look authentic. I'm all about embracing your culture, but running a kilt? That's just odd.

I have never actually joined any meet-up groups but I have scoped it out online and it is such a need idea. When we move back to AR next year I think I will use that site to try to make some new friends.

Sounds like you are adjusting. Sorry about missing the family.

A co-worker of mine is on his 11th IM (Brazil, I think). He is up in Raleigh. He is training my other co-worker to do the B2B.

Good luck!
