Seriously, why do people like summertime? We've gotten a slight reprieve from the heat this week in NC, and the NFL preseason started this week. So there is hope. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm out of balance right now, and can't seem to get my mojo back on track. The heat means I can only run first thing in the morning, and we're still working on that shed in the evenings. Here's the pattern I'm falling into:
Monday: AM yoga, noon swim
Tuesday: AM run, PM bike/strength
Wednesday: AM run, noon swim, PM church choir practice
Thursday: AM run, PM swim
Friday: AM yoga, noon swim
Saturday: long run, long swim
Sunday: total rest, church, and family day
So I'm getting 4 runs & 4 swims each week, 1 cross training workout, and only 2 yoga sessions. Regular time on the yoga mat keeps the body and mind at ease, and keeps your life in balance. I'm starting to think that I'm missing some of that.
Since I've been keeping this schedule, I've notice that I don't have as much patience with others. I'm getting angry quicker with my coworkers and my kids. It's been a stressful time anyway and I'm just not handling it with my usual calm zen demeanor. Where am I supposed to put in some more yoga time? I think I have to get my time on the mat somewhere to get that mental clarity and meditation time.
I have also recently started attending a men's bible study tuesday mornings at the church with a handful of other guys. This morning I threw out the old yogic saying "Everyone should meditate for 15 minutes a day, and if you don't have 15 minutes a day to meditate then you need to meditate for an hour a day". It got a big laugh and the message hit home. Prayer is talking to God, meditation is listening for the response. Calm the mind and everything else will work out.
Since my fall schedule has a 12 mile swim, marathon, and 50 mile ultra taking up 3 out of 4 weekends in a row I really need to get 25k in the pool every week and build my run volume up into the 40+ miles per week. and the "fall schedule" starts in only 7 weeks! So I can't really compromise the 4 runs or 4 swims per week, and soon I'll get the tuesday night swims back. that's going to be a nice option.
So I have to keep up the volume, and find more time for the mind. so ready to be done with summer.

I love summers but if you don't love summer, you shouldn't live in Minnesota because it's one of our nicest seasons of the year! We don't get the extreme heat and humidity that you guys do, though, so I can see why you don't love summer!!
I've been feeling pretty fatigued lately, too. I'm not sleeping well and that makes it hard to train as hard as I'd like to and get as many workouts in as I should. I'm running 3 times a week, swimming 1-2 times and biking 1-2 times a week. I'm doing zero yoga and pretty much zero strength training and that needs to change! But it will after my tri is behind me as I won't swim anymore and will really focus on getting 2 strength training sessions in!
You've got a lot going on! It is so hard to find a balance especially when there are so many things that you want to do in a day. I am so with you on the summer temps - bring on Fall!
Wow. You do two huge workouts a day. I am so amazed by how you make time for it all. And I agree, so ready for fall!!!!
